The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed 30 construction sites in the Federal Capital Territory for violations of environmental regulations.

The enforcement action, carried out on Tuesday, targeted operators found to be in breach of the National Environmental (Construction Sector) Regulations, 2011.

Speaking during the operation, NESREA Director General, Prof. Innocent Barikor, said the construction sector, though vital to national development, must comply with environmental laws to prevent hazards such as flooding, erosion, unsafe waste disposal, and pollution.

Represented by the Director of Environmental Quality Control, Mr. Elijah Udofia, Barikor said several operators failed to respond to regulatory notices and compliance requirements.

“These facilities demonstrated unwillingness to comply with environmental documentation and compliance engagements,” he said. “Where regulatory communication is clear and time-bound, failure to respond is a serious breach and poses risks to both the environment and public health.”

He added, “Environmental compliance is not a choice. The regulations are designed to prevent harm before it occurs.”

NESREA said the sealed sites include residential estates, construction companies, and engineering firms located mainly in Wuye, Jabi, Katampe, Jahi, Asokoro, and other parts of Abuja.

Barikor warned that the agency would continue enforcement nationwide, urging stakeholders in the construction sector to adhere strictly to environmental standards.

He said NESREA remains committed to ensuring that development does not come at the expense of public health and environmental safety.
