The Nigeria Customs Service has announced a new policy of compulsory drug testing for all new recruits and serving officers.

Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi made the declaration at the closing of the 2025 CGC Conference in Abuja, stating the move is essential to ensure a "fully drug-free institution."

The policy, which begins with the ongoing recruitment exercise, will be extended to all personnel across the service's zones, commands, and headquarters.

The CG explained that the decision was driven by incidents where erratic behavior and questionable decisions were traced to substance abuse.

“The Service would no longer tolerate a situation where personnel make sensitive decisions while under the influence of drugs,” Adeniyi was quoted as saying in an official statement.

He emphasized the critical need for sound judgment from officers entrusted with border security and revenue collection, warning, “There will be no compromise.”

The initiative aligns with a broader push by anti-narcotics officials for uniformed agencies to institutionalize drug testing to maintain discipline and public confidence.
