The Nigerian Navy rescued seven people Sunday following a collision between a Tantita patrol boat and a wooden market boat on the Ogboinbiri waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
NNS SOROH personnel responded swiftly after receiving a distress call, reaching the scene within minutes.
The rescued victims were evacuated to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Search efforts continue for others reported missing.
“This operation highlights our commitment to safeguarding lives and maritime security,” Navy Captain AA Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, said in a statement.
“The Nigerian Navy remains ready to deploy assets and personnel for timely responses to emergencies across the nation’s waterways.”
The rescue adds to the Navy’s record of rapid interventions. In March 2026, 16 passengers were rescued during a sea robbery in the Ibaka–Calabar Channel.
In December 2025, 20 crew members were saved from a burning vessel near Calabar, while in November 2025, 10 crew members were rescued from another distressed vessel in the same waters.
In October 2025, 17 kidnapped victims were recovered in Calabar waterways.
Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of the Naval Staff, has emphasized that maritime security operations must prioritize the protection of lives alongside law enforcement.
Folorunsho said the Ogboinbiri response reflects this vision.
“The Nigerian Navy is committed to acting swiftly in emergencies, following international best practices and ensuring the safety of all maritime users,” he said.
Authorities urge residents and boat operators to exercise caution in the waterways and report emergencies immediately to enhance rescue efforts.
