At least 13 people were killed and 98 others injured after a passenger train derailed near Nizanda in southern Mexico on Sunday.

The train, part of the Interoceanic Corridor project, was traveling through Oaxaca when it jumped the tracks. It carried 241 passengers and nine crew members, the Mexican Navy said.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the casualties on X, adding that five injured passengers are in critical condition. She has sent top officials to oversee the response and support the families.

Rescue efforts involved over 360 naval personnel, ambulances, and drones. Images from the scene showed overturned cars and emergency workers carrying victims through rough terrain.

Some survivors said the train appeared to be moving very fast before the crash. Investigators from the Attorney General’s Office have launched a probe into the cause.

The Interoceanic Corridor, opened in 2023, was designed as a key trade route across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, aiming to rival the Panama Canal and boost southern Mexico’s economy.
