The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the Senate’s decision to reject electronic transmission of election results, calling it a setback for Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement on Wednesday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the opposition party described the move as shameful and accused lawmakers of delaying amendments to the Electoral Act before arriving at the decision.
The PDP argued that most Nigerians support electronic transmission as a way to protect the integrity of elections. According to the party, relying on manual collation has often created room for the alteration of results at collation centres.
It warned that the Senate’s stance could weaken public trust in the electoral system and increase voter apathy in future elections. The party also accused the National Assembly of failing to show enough commitment to credible polls.
The PDP is now urging both the Senate and the House of Representatives to revisit the issue and approve electronic transmission of results, saying it is a basic step needed to rebuild confidence in the country’s electoral process.
