The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, led to the death of Mene Ogidi and sparked public concern over police conduct.
In a statement, the force said officers linked to the shooting were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary proceedings on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The Force Disciplinary Committee found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms. His actions were described as unlawful and unprofessional.
Following the findings, the committee recommended the dismissal of Usman and other culpable officers.
The inspector-general has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
Police authorities said that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.
The force reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for abuse of power and unlawful use of force, stressing that officers who violate the law will face disciplinary and legal consequences.
The inspector-general also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be pursued and accountability ensured.
Police urged the public to remain calm, adding that the force remains committed to professionalism, discipline and the protection of citizens’ rights.
