Residents in several parts of Sokoto State are planning a protest over what they describe as poor electricity supply and unfair billing by the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO).

The affected residents, who gathered in their hundreds on Friday for separate meetings, said the planned protest would involve communities including Danbuwa, Tamaje, Old Airport, Sabaru, Mabera and Kwanawa.

They accused the electricity distribution company of exploiting them through estimated billing despite very poor power supply.

According to the residents, the electricity situation in their areas has become unbearable, noting that while some parts of Sokoto reportedly receive between 10 and 15 hours of electricity daily, their communities sometimes receive less than two hours of power in an entire week.

Speaking ahead of the planned protest, representatives of the affected communities said they had already notified relevant authorities to ensure the protest is conducted without disruption.

They said letters had been sent to the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, National Human Rights Commission, Nigeria Labour Congress, Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, Department of State Services, KAEDCO and the Sokoto State Government.

The residents said the protest is aimed at demanding either improved electricity supply under the appropriate service band or an end to estimated billing for power not supplied.

They also warned against disconnection attempts over unpaid estimated bills, insisting they would no longer pay for electricity they do not receive.

The exact date for the protest was not confirmed, but residents said the details had already been communicated to the relevant authorities in their notification letters.
