The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has highlighted repairs to power infrastructure, increased transmission capacity and the deployment of more than 350,000 electricity meters as key achievements in his first 100 days in office.
Tegbe said the ministry spent much of the period assessing challenges in the power sector and implementing measures aimed at improving grid stability and supply reliability.
He said the 375-megawatt Alaoji power plant was restored after being offline for three years, while transmission capacity was unlocked in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country.
The minister also said funds were mobilised to address the sector’s longstanding debt burden, which he described as a major challenge to its sustainability.
According to him, more than 350,000 meters have also been deployed following the resolution of legal issues involving the Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria.
However, Tegbe acknowledged that many Nigerians still do not have reliable electricity and may not yet be experiencing the impact of the measures being implemented.
He said the government would not promise a quick fix, stressing that lasting improvements in the power sector would take time.
The minister also said there is currently no plan to increase electricity tariffs, while reaffirming his commitment to improving grid stability, supply reliability, billing accuracy and the resolution of customer complaints.
Tegbe said the ministry would continue to focus on reforms without taking shortcuts, while acknowledging that more work is required to deliver reliable electricity to Nigerians.
