The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strict data privacy standards in law enforcement, as Nigeria intensifies the use of technology in policing.
The Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, made the pledge at the National Data Privacy Summit 2026 held on Tuesday, February 4, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
The summit was organised by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) under the theme “Privacy in the Era of Emerging Technologies: Trust, Ethics and Innovation.”
Speaking at the event, Argungu described data protection as critical to modern crime prevention, noting that policing has moved beyond traditional, physical methods to intelligence- and data-driven approaches.
He commended the NDPC and its National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, for strengthening Nigeria’s data privacy framework, and assured stakeholders of the PSC’s full compliance with national data protection policies.
“In the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 police constables and across all our operations, the PSC is dedicated to strict compliance with NDPC policies on data protection,” Argungu said.
He added that the Commission would continue to work closely with the NDPC to promote ethical data management, protect citizens’ rights and build public trust.
The PSC said integrating responsible data practices into its operations is essential to improving policing efficiency and accountability across the country.
