The House of Representatives has dissolved all its ad hoc committees, directing members of the affected panels to immediately stop activities carried out in their names.
The directive was issued by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and conveyed in a circular signed by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim. The dissolution took effect Aug. 28, 2026.
The House said the decision followed repeated directives for the committees to conclude their assignments and submit outstanding reports within the deadlines set by its rules.
According to the circular, only two ad hoc committees sought and received extensions under Order 18, Rule 5 of the House Standing Orders. However, the two-week extensions granted to them had expired without the committees completing their assignments.
The Clerk said ad hoc committees are temporary bodies established for specific, time-bound mandates and are not intended to continue beyond the period approved for their assignments.
The House also cited Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5, which requires committees to submit their reports within the time allotted to them.
“Having exceeded the time allotted, the continued existence of the Ad Hoc Committees is no longer tenable,” the circular said.
Chairmen of the affected committees were directed to submit all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping.
The House instructed all members of the dissolved committees to comply with the directive and cease all activities being carried out under the committees’ names.
The move is part of efforts by the House leadership to enforce compliance with deadlines for temporary committees and prevent legislative assignments from continuing indefinitely beyond their approved mandates.
