Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has said the pupils and teachers rescued after being abducted in Oriire Local Government Area will remain under medical observation for 48 hours before being handed over to the state government.

Makinde disclosed this on Saturday during a visit to the rescued victims at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, where they are receiving medical care following their release.

The governor described the rescue as a moment of relief and thanksgiving, saying the safe return of the victims was a source of joy for their families and the people of Oyo State.

According to him, all 39 abducted pupils and five of the seven teachers have been rescued.

Makinde commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies involved in the operation, praising their courage and professionalism in securing the victims’ release.

He, however, noted that the operation came at a heavy cost, revealing that some security personnel lost their lives during the rescue mission.

The governor extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices would not be forgotten.

Speaking on the condition of the rescued victims, Makinde said many appeared physically weak and emotionally affected by their ordeal, stressing that they would receive comprehensive medical treatment, counselling and rehabilitation.

He explained that military authorities advised that the pupils and teachers remain under observation for 48 hours before a full medical and psychological assessment is completed and they are formally handed over to the state government.

Makinde said the state fully supports the decision, noting that the health and wellbeing of the rescued victims remain the top priority.

The governor also disclosed that arrangements are being made for family members to visit the victims at the military facility, adding that one of the rescued girls had repeatedly requested to see her mother since regaining her freedom.

He urged Nigerians to remain united in tackling insecurity, saying cooperation, vigilance and support for security agencies are essential in the fight against criminality.

Makinde added that the Oyo State Government would provide a comprehensive briefing in the coming days on the circumstances surrounding the abduction and the coordinated efforts that led to the successful rescue of the victims.
