A State High Court in Port Harcourt presided by Justice Chiwendu Wogu has adjourned the hearing on a criminal lawsuit against Rivers State former governor, Chibuike Amaechi and the APC governorship candidate in the state, Tonye Cole.

The court will now sit on Thursday 19 January due to the absence of the defendants in court.

The seven-count criminal charge, filed by the Rivers State government, borders on the alleged misappropriation of public funds between 2007 and 2015 when Amaechi was governor.

A former commissioner for power, Augustine Wokocha is also a defendant in the case.

One of the lawyers to the Rivers State government, Alphonsus Sibi told Nigeria Info that the prosecution wants the court to ascertain if the funds were properly utilized.

The case involves the sales of four gas turbines and the Olympia Hotel.

It also includes the alleged withdrawal of N96 billion from the Rivers State treasury and the award of the contract for the Port Harcourt Mono Rail, done when Amaechi was governor.

An earlier suit filed against Amaechi and Cole was struck out in October 2022 after the Rivers State attorney-general withdrew the charges.

The new suit was filed this year.
