The Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics has pledged legislative support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency as it intensifies efforts against drug abuse and illicit trafficking across Nigeria.

Committee Chairman Sen. Joseph Igiagbe Ikpea gave the assurance during a visit to NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, where he met with the agency's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, retired Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa.

Ikpea said the committee would work closely with the agency to strengthen rehabilitation programmes, expand public awareness campaigns and support laws aimed at reducing drug abuse.

"We are happy to work with you and support you because we know you are already doing a great job," Ikpea said.

Marwa welcomed the pledge and said the agency had recorded significant successes, including dismantling transnational drug cartels, arresting major traffickers and seizing criminal assets.

"The drug problem is a major challenge that is at the root of many social issues," Marwa said. "We are doing our level best to curb the scourge and we are getting impressive results."

He credited the agency's progress to support from President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly and the judiciary, and pledged continued action to reduce both drug supply and demand nationwide.
