Senegal’s President of the National Assembly, El Malick Ndiaye, has announced his resignation from office, saying the decision was guided by “the supreme interest of the nation.”
In a statement posted on his X account on Sunday and translated from French, Ndiaye said the move followed “deep reflection” and a personal commitment to institutional responsibility and state service.
He said he had devoted his tenure to strengthening parliamentary oversight, improving transparency, and modernising the National Assembly, while working with both majority and opposition lawmakers.
Ndiaye expressed gratitude to members of parliament, parliamentary staff, political allies, and the Senegalese public for their support during his time in office.
He also thanked supporters of the PASTEF party, saying their trust and commitment to democratic ideals had been a source of motivation.
The outgoing speaker said he remained committed to Senegal’s democracy and national development, adding that “the stability of institutions and national cohesion must remain the country’s guiding compass.”
His resignation marks a significant political development in Senegal’s legislature, though no immediate successor has been announced.
