A suspected outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis has killed several people in Kurawa village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with children and teenagers among the worst affected, the state government said.
Sokoto State Commissioner for Health Faruk Abubakar Wurno confirmed the outbreak, saying health teams have been deployed to investigate and contain the situation while providing treatment.
“I received the report on Sunday and immediately deployed health personnel to investigate the situation and provide necessary medications free of charge,” he said.
He said the exact number of deaths is still being verified as surveillance continues.
The outbreak, which health authorities say began about three weeks ago, has affected mainly children, with symptoms including high fever, severe neck pain, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of consciousness and, in some cases, foaming from the mouth—consistent with meningitis.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as response teams work to control the spread and provide medical support in the affected community.
