Sunderland Penalty Against Arsenal Ruled Incorrect by Premier League Panel

A Premier League Key Match Incidents panel has unanimously ruled that the penalty awarded to Sunderland against Arsenal was incorrect.

Referee John Brooks awarded Sunderland a spot-kick after penalising Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa for holding Dan Ballard during a corner in their September 12 meeting. 

David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee’s penalty as Arsenal went on to win 2-0.

The five-member panel said Ballard also engaged in a holding action that pulled Konsa onto him, causing both players to fall. 

However, it voted 3-2 that VAR Stuart Attwell was right not to intervene because the incident did not amount to a clear and obvious error.

Meanwhile, the panel unanimously ruled that Erling Haaland’s winner in Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United should have been disallowed for offside. 

It also backed Phil Foden’s red card in the same match, while saying Bruno Fernandes should have received a yellow card for his role in the incident.
