President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says his administration will review tariffs on newspaper and broadcasting materials to support the growth of the media industry.

The president gave the assurance at the State House while hosting leaders of the Nigerian media.

They included representatives of the Nigeria Press Organisation, the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria, the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

Tinubu commended media owners, editors and journalists for informing and educating citizens and providing employment for thousands of Nigerians.

He said responsible leadership requires taking difficult decisions at the right time.

According to the president, his administration implemented tough reforms to stabilise the country’s economy and prevent economic collapse.

He cited issues such as rising exchange rates, inflation and outstanding obligations owed to international airlines.

On concerns raised by media stakeholders over tariffs affecting the industry, Tinubu said the matter would be addressed.

Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, expressed confidence in the president’s leadership.

Former Ogun State governor Olusegun Osoba also commended the administration’s economic reforms.

President of the Nigeria Press Organisation and publisher of BusinessDay newspaper, Frank Aigbogun, called on the federal government to address import tariffs on newsprint and broadcasting equipment.

He also urged the government to protect jobs in the media industry, warning that global technology companies increasingly use editorial content from Nigerian media organisations without compensation.
