President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democracy and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.

Tinubu said the unity and stability of the country depend on good governance, assuring that his government will sustain democratic principles as a lasting legacy.

The president spoke during an inter faith breaking of the fast with members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress and leaders of the Inter Party Advisory Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu said strengthening internal democracy within political parties is essential for building credible electoral institutions and processes.

He added that direct primaries offer party members greater opportunities to participate in selecting their representatives.

“I am a die hard democrat,” the president said, recalling the struggle for democratic rule in Nigeria, including protests, detentions and political exile by pro democracy activists.

He said the rule of law must prevail in any democratic system, noting that the majority should have their way while the minority must also be allowed to express their views.

Tinubu also assured party leaders of his commitment to free and fair elections, saying democracy in Nigeria remains voluntary and participatory.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, commended the president for what he described as strong leadership and effective management of Nigeria’s diverse society.

He assured the president of the party’s support in achieving his vision for the country.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Dantalle, urged the president to reconsider the use of the National Identity Number as a requirement for voter registration.

Dantalle said the policy could disenfranchise eligible voters and also called for the restoration of financial support from the Independent National Electoral Commission to political parties.

He also announced the production of a documentary titled Unbroken Democracy to mark 26 years of democratic rule in Nigeria.

The project, supported by Hope Uzodimma and chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, is expected to premiere at the State House soon.
