Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised Cardinal John Onaiyekan over his comments on President Bola Tinubu's administration, saying religious leaders should avoid being perceived as politically partisan if they want their views to retain credibility.
Speaking during his monthly media chat on Tuesday, Wike said governments should welcome constructive criticism but argued that religious leaders should also acknowledge areas where an administration has performed well.
According to him, consistently negative remarks could create the impression of political bias.
The minister also dismissed claims that religious leaders remained neutral during the 2023 general election, insisting many openly supported political interests.
He maintained that while there is nothing wrong with taking political positions, religious leaders should ensure their public commentary is balanced.
Wike's remarks come amid a public disagreement between the Presidency and Cardinal Onaiyekan following the cleric's comments after a meeting between President Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria.
Onaiyekan had raised concerns over economic hardship, insecurity and governance, while the Presidency defended the administration's record and accused some church leaders of adopting partisan positions.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has since condemned the Presidency's criticism of the cardinal and called for an apology to the Catholic Church.
