Recent defections from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State have generated mixed reactions among residents.

The development follows the defection of two Rivers senators and six members of the House of Representatives from the PDP to the APC.

The move comes shortly after Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, also defected from the PDP to the APC.

During conversations on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, callers expressed differing opinions on the reasons behind the defections. One caller said the situation was driven by personal interests, noting that politicians are free to join any party of their choice but should place the interests of their constituents above personal ambition.

Another caller argued that remaining in the PDP is no longer viable, saying the party has weakened. He stated that joining the APC could improve the lawmakers’ chances of re-election and benefit their constituents as well as the ruling party in future elections.

However, a final caller maintained that the defections were not motivated by public interest but by the lawmakers’ desire to retain their political positions.

As preparations begin for the 2027 elections, the future of the PDP in Rivers State remains uncertain.
