2027 Elections: Obi Calls for ‘Revolution’ in Nigeria

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for a revolution to change Nigeria’s direction, accusing President Bola Tinubu of failing to address the country’s major problems.

Obi spoke Monday in Abuja during the inauguration of the NDC Presidential Campaign Council, where he criticised the president over insecurity, poverty, corruption and his frequent trips abroad.

“We don't need a government where if there is a problem, our president will run away,” Obi said.

He accused Tinubu of travelling outside Nigeria more than 260 times in three years, while failing to visit every state to explain his administration’s achievements.

“Our president has been out of this country for over 260 times in the past three years and now he can't take 30 days to go to all the states of Nigeria to tell them what he has been doing for the past three years with their money,” Obi said.

“That is unacceptable, as we will need a revolution that will turn this country around,” he added.

The former Anambra governor also described Tinubu’s government as lacking the ability and commitment to solve Nigeria’s problems.

“Today, everything is collapsing.

“From our engagements across Nigeria, Nigerians are looking for new leadership, and we assure you that we will create that leadership,” he said.

Obi also accused the president of failing to account for money borrowed by his administration and its achievements under the 2023, 2024 and 2025 budgets.

“Rather than explain what he has achieved with the 2023, 2024 and 2025 budgets, he chose to blame the opposition for creating poverty,” he said.

He promised that his administration would focus on solving problems instead of blaming others, with a strong commitment to fighting corruption.

“Let me assure you: we will not lead a government of blame.

“The purpose of governance is to solve problems, not to blame people.

“I will not blame anybody,” Obi said.

He also pledged to protect public funds and ensure they benefit Nigerians rather than private interests.

“My government will uphold integrity, enforce accountability, and ensure that public funds serve the people, not private interests,” he said.

Obi’s comments came days after Tinubu launched his re-election campaign in Kaduna ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The NDC candidate said Nigeria needed leadership that would be available and committed to addressing the country’s challenges.
