Benin has arrested around a dozen soldiers, including the alleged ringleaders of Sunday’s failed coup attempt, military and security sources told AFP.
A security official said 13 people had been taken into custody, while another source noted that all of those detained were serving soldiers except one, a former member of the armed forces.
The arrests follow an early-morning broadcast on state television in which a group of officers announced the removal of President Patrice Talon and the dissolution of all state institutions.
The soldiers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, claimed they had seized power before the signal was cut.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those arrested, and there has been no official statement from the government on the detentions.
Further details were not immediately available.
