Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has said none of the politicians challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election can fundamentally change Nigeria, including his former running mate, Peter Obi.
Baba-Ahmed made the statement during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast while discussing the 2027 election and the growing opposition coalition.
“I will simply advise Uncle (Tinubu) to please prepare to hand over and move away, but not to the people contesting against him,” Baba-Ahmed said.
“Because none of them will improve Nigeria.
"All those people contesting against him too were all in bed together at some point or another, including Peter Obi.
"At some point, he was in PDP,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed, who was Obi’s running mate in the 2023 election, said he was pushing for a “new Nigeria” and presented himself as the only major political figure who had never belonged to a ruling party.
“Tell me one politician who has never been in a ruling party.
"I’m the one.
"Have I ever been in a ruling party?” he said.
He explained that although he belonged to the Congress for Progressive Change, he left before the party merged with others to form the All Progressives Congress.
“I never had an APC membership card,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He also rejected suggestions that his political decisions must follow Obi’s, saying, “Obi does not own me.
"I own my independence.”
Baba-Ahmed said Tinubu should not seek to remain in power beyond a second term but accused the president of weakening opposition parties.
“All he did in three years was to destroy political parties,” he said.
The comments come as Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures work toward a possible alliance ahead of the 2027 election.
Baba-Ahmed previously said he advised Obi to work with former Kano Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso, arguing that opposition politicians needed to plan early to challenge the ruling APC.
