Minister of Defence Christopher Musa has accused former Kaduna State Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of deliberately planning the killing of people in Southern Kaduna during his time in office.
Musa made the allegation Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
He also accused El-Rufai’s administration of creating deep divisions between northern and southern parts of Kaduna State.
“We know how it was when El-Rufai was there; it was toxic,” Musa said.
He alleged that people from Southern Kaduna could not freely live in the northern part of the state, while people from the north moved to the south.
Musa said residents of Southern Kaduna remain deeply affected by killings recorded during El-Rufai’s administration.
“We can never be happy with somebody who has deliberately planned for the killing of our people,” he said.
The minister also claimed El-Rufai had spoken openly about paying bandits and other actions taken by his administration.
“He told us he paid bandits.
"He told us he did this, he did that.
"He didn’t hide it,” Musa said, without providing evidence during the interview to support his allegation that El-Rufai planned the killings.
Musa said the situation in Southern Kaduna has improved under Gov. Uba Sani, although he acknowledged that the state still has work to do.
“The Southern Kaduna people are still very pained,” he said, adding that the number of killings under the previous administration could not be compared with the current situation.
Musa also called for politicians who would unite Nigerians rather than use religion or ethnicity to divide them.
“We should get politicians that want to unite Nigeria,” he said.
El-Rufai’s family and media team had not publicly responded to the allegations in the reports reviewed.
