FBI Arrests Nine in Nigeria Over Cybercrime, Seizes 53 Devices

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation says nine suspects have been arrested in Nigeria over alleged cybercrime, with 53 electronic devices seized during the operation.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrests, saying the operation also identified about 11 million dollars in funds that could potentially be frozen across several countries.

The operation, known as Operation Blackout, targets international criminal networks accused of running online scams, including cryptocurrency investment fraud, impersonation scams and online extortion.

Patel said the networks steal money from victims, particularly Americans, and often operate across national borders.

He thanked Nigerian law enforcement agencies and their partners in London for helping with the operation.

The arrests form part of a wider crackdown involving Nigeria and Ghana.

According to the US Department of Justice, the coordinated operation resulted in 28 arrests and the removal of more than 3.7 million fraudulent online accounts.

The department also confirmed that nine suspects were arrested and 53 devices seized in Nigeria.

The 11 million dollars identified represents funds that could potentially be frozen.

It has not been confirmed as money recovered or returned to victims.
