The Federal Government has begun a coordinated operation across the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi State, and Ogun State to reduce tsetse fly infestation and protect livestock and public health.

Officials say the week-long intervention, carried out from 20 to 24 April 2026, targets grazing reserves, livestock settlements, and major disease transmission routes across the three locations.

According to authorities, the campaign combines surveillance, vector control, and community engagement, with teams using biconical traps, fumigation, and insecticide spraying in affected areas.

The government said the approach is designed “to generate accurate data while reducing the spread of diseases linked to the tsetse fly.”

In the FCT, activities focused on the Paikon Kore Grazing Reserve, which hosts more than 15,000 cattle, with traps placed at 500-metre intervals for monitoring.

Officials warned about trypanosomiasis, describing it as a major disease transmitted by tsetse flies that affects both animals and humans and threatens food security.

They also noted that livestock owners reported other diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, calling for more vaccines and stronger veterinary support.

In Kogi State, the operation covered Adavi, Lokoja, Koton Karfe, Ajaokuta, Ofu, and Idah, due to its role as a major livestock transit hub.

Authorities said “successful containment efforts in Kogi could significantly impact disease control nationwide,” while urging communities to support the exercise.

In Ogun State, operations were extended to Ewekoro, Abeokuta North, and Odeda, with the state promising continued free vaccination programmes for livestock.

Federal officials said the campaign follows the “One Health approach,” integrating human, animal, and environmental health, as Nigeria works toward a tsetse-free and disease-resilient livestock system.
