Five transmission towers along the Ikot Abasi-Eket 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line in Akwa Ibom have collapsed following what the Transmission Company of Nigeria described as severe vandalism.
TCN said the damage was discovered during a routine joint line patrol by its linesmen on 9th August 2026.
A preliminary assessment showed that critical structural bracing members were removed from five transmission towers in the circuit, causing the five towers to collapse.
TCN said further inspection found that structural members had also been removed and stolen from seven other towers along the same corridor.
The affected towers are now “structurally compromised” and could also collapse.
To reduce the effect on electricity supply, TCN said the network had been reconfigured to “prioritise supply to Ekim transmission station,” leaving Ibom Power as the only station without supply.
“TCN Management is mobilising an urgent intervention to complete the reconstruction of the affected sections of the line,” the company said.
It added that security agencies had been notified to support investigations and prevent further vandalism along the line.
TCN condemned the incident as an act of “sabotage” and said it remained committed to maintaining “a robust and reliable national grid.”
The company urged continued efforts to protect transmission infrastructure, warning that damage to towers and other equipment can disrupt electricity supply.
