The Kano State Government has approved ₦10.47 billion for the reconstruction of the Ungogo–Minjibir Road, about five months after our weekly Community Report highlighted the plight of residents living with the road’s poor condition.
The report, broadcast in February on Cool FM, Wazobia FM, Arewa Radio and Nigeria Info, focused on the difficulties faced by residents of more than 33 communities along the road.
For more than two decades, residents had complained about the deteriorating route, which they said had become dangerous and disrupted farming, trade and movement.
The poor condition of the road has made it difficult for farmers to move their produce to markets and for residents to access healthcare, schools and other essential services.
The government approved the reconstruction at its 40th Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said the project would improve transportation and address years of neglect along the corridor.
Residents welcomed the approval but said they wanted work to begin quickly.
Sani Haruna, leader of the Western Minjibir Development Association, commended the government for responding to their concerns.
“We appreciate the government for approving the reconstruction, but we want the work to begin without further delay because people have suffered for too long,” Haruna said.
He also urged the government to ensure the project was completed according to specification and within the approved timeline.
For residents who have waited years for the road to be fixed, the approval offers hope of an end to the difficulties caused by its poor condition.
The next concern is when construction will begin and how quickly the project will be completed.
