The Lagos State government has ordered an investigation into an alleged case of medical negligence following the death of Nkanu, the son of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, at a private hospital in Lagos.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Health, the government said it had been alerted to Adichie’s account of the incident, which reportedly occurred on Jan. 6. Officials expressed condolences to the writer and her family, describing the death of a child as “a profound tragedy.”

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, known as HEFAMAA, to launch an “immediate, thorough, independent and transparent” investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

HEFAMAA has begun inquiries and has visited the facility involved, the government said. The agency is expected to review all allegations and reports connected to the incident.

The agency, which regulates and accredits public and private health facilities in Lagos, will work with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other relevant bodies to ensure what officials described as a credible and professional process.

The investigation will examine compliance with clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards and the roles of all parties involved. Authorities said the findings would be made public once the process is completed.

The Lagos government said it has zero tolerance for medical negligence and warned that any individual or institution found culpable would face sanctions under existing laws.

Officials urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while the probe continues, saying due process would be followed to ensure fairness and accountability.

“The Lagos State Government places the highest value on human life,” the statement said, adding that the state remains committed to safeguarding the health and rights of residents.

The government again extended condolences to Adichie and her family.
