The Lagos State Government plans to open three additional stations on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line by the end of February 2027, in a move expected to bring train services closer to more residents.

Abimbola Akinajo, managing director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), announced the plan at the 2026 media parley organised by the state Ministry of Transportation.

In a statement on Thursday, LAMATA said the new stations would be located in FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair.

“The new stations — FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair — will extend the reach of the Blue Line and increase the number of operational stations from five to eight, marking another significant milestone in Lagos State’s drive to deliver an integrated, efficient and world-class public transportation system,” the statement said.

The Blue Line currently operates five stations: Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba and Mile 2.

The addition of the three stations will extend the rail network beyond its current terminus at Mile 2, giving commuters along the FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair corridor greater access to train services.

LAMATA said the expansion was expected to “strengthen connectivity, improve access to mass transit and provide more residents with an alternative to road transportation.”

The authority added that four Quality Bus Corridors were nearing completion, while construction work on the Marina and Mile 2 interchange hubs had recorded considerable progress.

The projects form part of Lagos State’s efforts to improve connections between trains and buses and reduce pressure on the state’s busy roads.

The Blue Line began commercial operations in September 2023, initially serving passengers between Marina and Mile 2.

The planned expansion is expected to increase the reach of the rail system as Lagos continues to invest in public transportation to meet the needs of its growing population.
