Lagos Waste Agency Urges Cleaning Rules Along Badagry Expressway

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has asked people living and working around the Lagos–Badagry Expressway to dispose of their rubbish only through official waste collectors.

LAWMA said its teams have started cleaning large piles of waste at several “blackspot” areas where trash had built up.

The work began at Alaba Rago and is continuing at places including Orile, Doyin, Agric, Barracks Iyana-Iba and Agbara.

The agency’s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the work is part of a bigger effort to keep the environment clean and healthy.

He reminded traders, residents and transport workers to use Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators — the officially registered waste collectors — to take away their rubbish.

LAWMA has been stepping up these actions because too many people still throw waste on roads, in drains or in open spaces.

These piles of trash can block drains, make the area look dirty and cause diseases or floods when it rains.

Officials say using registered PSP operators helps keep waste under control and protects public health.

Authorities have also been enforcing cleaner habits by checking receipts and ensuring people pay for proper waste collection.

LAWMA has arrested unauthorised waste handlers, such as illegal cart pushers, and warned that breaking sanitation laws can lead to penalties.

Officials say keeping Lagos clean is everyone’s responsibility, and that working with authorised waste collectors is a key part of that effort.
