The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) responded to 1,409 road crashes and rescued 670 victims across the state between January and September 2026, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The figures were disclosed in a statement signed by Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s director of public affairs and enlightenment.

The agency said its officers were deployed to crash scenes to assess incidents, rescue victims, control traffic and prevent further accidents.

It added that the interventions helped reduce traffic congestion, restore movement and provide access for other emergency responders.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki said prompt reporting and cooperation among emergency agencies were important in reducing casualties.

He said “prompt incident reporting and effective inter-agency collaboration remain indispensable to reducing casualties and enhancing road safety outcomes.”

The agency works with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency responders during rescue operations.

The latest figures come amid continuing concerns about road safety in Lagos. Radio Nigeria Lagos reported that 69 people died and 246 were injured in road crashes in the state between January and March 2026.

LASTMA also attended to more than 600 crash scenes during the period.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to obey speed limits and traffic signals, wear seat belts and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy.

He also warned against distracted driving and reckless manoeuvres, saying “defensive driving and responsible motoring remain fundamental safeguards against preventable road traffic crashes.”

The LASTMA chief urged commercial drivers, private motorists, dispatch riders and pedestrians to obey traffic rules and report crashes and road obstructions promptly.

He encouraged road users to report incidents through the authority’s toll-free short code, 3367.

“Road safety demands collective responsibility and an unwavering commitment from every road user,” he said.
