On Saturday, Uganda’s electoral commission declared President Yoweri Museveni the winner of Thursday’s presidential vote, extending his rule into a seventh term.

The commission’s figure put Museveni on roughly 71–72% of the vote, with main challenger Bobi Wine winning about 24–25%, according to official tallies released so far.

Wine’s camp rejected the result, accusing election officials and security forces of fraud and violence.

The opposition said Mr. Wine had been blocked from campaigning and that police and soldiers raided his home and detained or isolated his team — claims authorities deny.

“They do this because they are afraid of the people’s reaction after stealing their vote,” Wine wrote on social media.

The vote was marred by reports of an internet shutdown, delays caused by failed biometric machines in some urban centres, and clashes that left several people dead, agencies reported.

International observers and rights groups raised concerns about restrictions on campaign activity and the climate of intimidation ahead of the poll.

Museveni, 81, has led Uganda since 1986 and removed presidential term and age limits that previously barred long stays in office.

Supporters say he brings stability and regional security, while critics say the electoral environment favoured the incumbent and that the result will deepen political tensions.
