The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has arrested two elderly men in Abia State for allegedly selling illicit drugs to secondary school students, including teenagers.

The suspects, identified as 84-year-old Godfrey Orji and 75-year-old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, were arrested in separate operations in Umuahia.

NDLEA said Obiora was arrested on 19th of June after intelligence reports linked him to the sale of illicit substances from his patent medicine store on Club Road.

Officers recovered 4.64 kilograms of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam.

Orji, a pensioner, was reportedly caught by security guards at Saint Silas Secondary School while supplying drugs to two students.

He was later handed over to NDLEA.

According to the agency, a 15-year-old SS2 student told investigators that Orji regularly supplied him with drugs, which he used and sold to classmates.

The students have been placed on counseling and rehabilitation, while both elderly suspects are expected to face prosecution.

The arrests came as NDLEA announced a series of drug seizures across the country.

Operatives intercepted 9.5 kilograms of ADB Chminaca, described as “a dangerous new psychoactive substance,” hidden in a shipment from China.

Another 300 grams of Loud, “a strong strain of cannabis,” was discovered concealed in ladies’ handbags destined for export.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers for the arrests and seizures, saying their drug supply reduction efforts were effectively balanced with ongoing anti-drug awareness campaigns nationwide.
