The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has rejected claims about its power capacity, saying recent figures shared by a distribution company are incorrect.

In a recent statement released to the press, TCN said a social media post by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) gave “intentionally inaccurate information” about its operations.

PHEDC had claimed TCN’s transmission capacity was 7,300 megawatts, with actual output between 4,000MW and 5,000MW, but TCN said those figures are outdated.

The company stated that its “verified transmission wheeling capacity” is now 8,700MW, following major investments in transformers, substations and transmission lines.

TCN also said recent performance records contradict the lower figures, noting it successfully transmitted over 5,800MW in March 2025, the highest in Nigeria’s history.

It added that electricity supply depends on coordination between generation companies, transmission systems and distribution companies, not just one player.

“Daily output on the national grid is a function” of what each part of the power chain can deliver, the company said.

Nigeria’s power sector has long struggled with low supply, with many homes and businesses receiving far less electricity than needed.

TCN warned that misinformation can “undermine public trust” and affect decisions in the power sector, especially as the country works to improve electricity supply.

It urged all stakeholders to verify information before sharing it, adding that it remains committed to “transparency, collaboration, and the continued growth” of the sector.
