The Nigerian Air Force said it has destroyed a major insurgent base in the Timbuktu Triangle, dealing what it described as a significant blow to terrorist groups operating in the area.

The air force said the strike was carried out on Jan. 8 under Operation Hadin Kai, targeting hideouts and logistics facilities at Abbaga Jiri, identified as a hub for insurgent activity.

In a statement, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the air force’s spokesperson, said the operation followed “credible, multi-source intelligence” confirming the presence of terrorists, structures and concealed supplies at the site.

NAF aircraft were deployed for surveillance and precision strikes aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities, denying them safe havens and supporting advancing ground forces, Ejodame said.

He said the mission was conducted in line with rules of engagement and with consideration for the protection of civilians.

“The air strikes decisively destroyed the identified structures, effectively denying the terrorists freedom of movement and operational space,” Ejodame said, adding that a follow-up engagement neutralised armed elements seen converging on the area after the initial attack.

Ground troops who later advanced into the location confirmed the effectiveness of the air operation, the statement said.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, said the mission demonstrated the air force’s resolve to dominate the airspace in support of joint operations.

“This operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to delivering precise and decisive air power in support of ground forces,” Aneke said. “We will continue to deny terrorists freedom of movement, sanctuary and logistics wherever they attempt to hide.”

He said air force operations would remain intelligence-driven and focused on achieving maximum impact on hostile elements while safeguarding civilians.
