The Nigerian Army has confirmed it arrested a social media influencer, days after earlier denying he was in its custody, following public outrage and calls for answers.
The influencer, Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, was picked up after he shared complaints by soldiers about their welfare on social media, the Army said in a statement.
The admission came after widespread concern online, with many Nigerians demanding to know his whereabouts.
The Army had earlier said he was not in its custody, a position that drew criticism and increased pressure.
In its latest explanation, the Army said it began investigating after Chidiebere’s posts raised issues about “feeding and other matters relating to their welfare.”
It added that initial findings went beyond welfare complaints. “Preliminary report reveals that the soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere who seemed to be inciting soldiers to create discontent within the system,” the statement said.
The Army also cited security concerns, saying, “A situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security.”
According to the statement, Chidiebere was arrested alongside some soldiers involved in the discussions.
While the soldiers remain in military custody, he has been handed over to civil authorities “for further investigation and possible prosecution.”
The Army insisted its actions followed due process.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to the rule of law,” it said, adding that it would continue to work with relevant agencies “to ensure justice is served.”
The case has sparked debate about military welfare, freedom of expression, and the role of civilians in engaging with security personnel.
