The Nigerian Army says its troops have dismantled a camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, during an operation in Imo State.
The Army said the operation was carried out by troops of the 82 Division, working with other security agencies, along the Ubaha Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area on 24 April 2026.
According to the statement, the mission was based on intelligence and was part of “a deliberate clearance and search operation aimed at dismantling IPOB/ESN hideout within the region.”
It also aimed at locating the remains of two soldiers, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and killed in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
The Army said troops “came under heavy attack by armed criminals” but responded with force, adding that they “successfully repelled multiple ambushes and forced the criminals to flee in disarray.”
After clearing the area, soldiers discovered “shallow graves suspected to contain the remains of the slain personnel,” which were later excavated for further examination.
The statement said the remains have been secured for “detailed forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to conclusively establish their identities.”
It added that the Army is working with families of the fallen soldiers “to ensure proper identification and facilitate befitting burial arrangements in honour of their sacrifice.”
The military said the operation shows its “unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for fallen heroes” and the continued weakening of IPOB/ESN networks in the South East.
It also urged residents to support security efforts, saying the Army “remains resolute, professional and committed to defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria.”
