NNPP Calls Gov. Abba Yusuf a “Betrayer of Sacred Trust” After Resignation

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has blasted Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State for formally resigning from the party, calling his action “a cold betrayal of a sacred trust” and rejecting his claim of an “irredeemable crisis” inside the party.

In a statement signed by NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, the National Working Committee said it received news of Yusuf’s resignation “with profound anguish and deep disappointment.”

The party said Yusuf’s sudden exit risks “returning the state to the very forces that have long opposed its progress and the aspirations of its people.”

Governor Yusuf’s resignation — communicated in a letter to his ward chairperson and made effective 23rd January — was announced by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.

The governor’s letter thanked party members for their support during his time in the NNPP.

The NNPP said the resignation is inexplicable in light of recent internal activity, noting that Yusuf attended party congresses from the ward level up to the national convention on 20th December 2025 — processes the party said were supervised by INEC.

For that reason, the NWC described Yusuf’s claims of an irredeemable crisis as “baseless and an afterthought.”

Political watchers say Yusuf is expected to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that could reshape Kano’s political balance ahead of 2027.
