Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for unity among opposition leaders following the defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi made the call via an X post on Tuesday while reacting to Kwankwaso’s move, which is seen as a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In the statement he shared after visiting Kano, Obi urged political actors to work together, saying, “We must move beyond the politics of division… and embrace the politics of competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment.”

He added, “The task before us is not about winning elections alone; it is about rebuilding institutions… and securing a better future for our children.”

Kwankwaso’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ADC has been widely described as a boost for opposition efforts to form a strong coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Top political figures, including Obi and other opposition leaders, were present in Kano to welcome Kwankwaso into the party, highlighting growing cooperation among key players.

ADC National Chairman, David Mark, described the development as part of a broader effort to unite opposition forces and protect Nigeria’s democracy.

He said the move reflects “a deliberate response” to calls for a stronger, united front.

Analysts say the growing alliance within the ADC could reshape the political space, as more leaders and supporters rally around a common platform.

With preparations for 2027 already taking shape, Obi stressed that unity and cooperation will be key to addressing Nigeria’s challenges and offering voters a credible alternative.
