One person was killed and two others injured in separate crashes on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway early Friday, prompting the Federal Road Safety Corps to advise motorists to use alternative routes as emergency workers cleared the scene.
The first crash happened at about 12:05 a.m. on the outbound lane toward Ibadan.
It involved five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna.
According to the FRSC, preliminary findings showed that "the crash resulted from speed violation and loss of control."
Seven adult men were involved.
One person died, one was injured and five others escaped without injuries.
The FRSC said the body of the deceased remained trapped beneath one of the heavily loaded trucks, making it necessary to deploy heavy-duty recovery equipment before it could be recovered.
While rescue efforts were underway, another crash occurred around 3:15 a.m. on the inbound lane toward Lagos.
The lone crash involved a Mazda commercial bus and was caused by brake failure.
The FRSC said the driver was seriously injured and was taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for treatment.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said another multiple-vehicle crash involving a Toyota Sienna and two Cabstar trucks was linked to an articulated trailer that had overturned earlier on the bridge.
It said recovery operations were ongoing, causing heavy traffic stretching to Otedola Bridge and affecting Isheri-Olowora and Ogunusi Road.
The agency added that officials had opened one-way traffic from Berger to OPIC Turning to ease congestion.
The FRSC urged motorists to "exercise patience, caution and cooperate with traffic management personnel" and advised drivers to use alternative routes until recovery operations are completed.
It also reminded motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and unnecessary night travel.
