The Oodua Youth Parliament (OYP) on Tuesday praised Nigeria’s new Defence minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, for early improvements in the country’s security work and urged that reforms be sustained.

In a statement by Speaker Hon. Aare Abdulmajeed Oladimeji Oyeniyi, the Parliament described General Musa’s leadership as “firm, professional, and reassuring at a critical moment in Nigeria’s security journey.”

OYP listed several developments it said show progress, including a “clearer and firmer posture against armed criminal groups,” improved operational response with “successful intelligence-led interventions” and the rescue of kidnapped civilians in states such as Taraba, and “faster containment of security incidents” in Plateau State.

The statement also noted “enhanced regional and border awareness,” saying Nigeria is showing “proactive monitoring of transnational threats.”

“These early gains, though still evolving, indicate a renewed seriousness and strategic clarity within the Ministry of Defence,” the OYP said.

The youth body also set out reforms it wants sustained.

It urged leaders to strengthen “intelligence fusion and community trust,” improve “justice and accountability mechanisms,” and boost “troop welfare, logistics, and morale.”

The Parliament called for expanded “civil–military engagement” and “responsible strategic communication” to counter misinformation and build public confidence.

“Security reform is a continuous process. Consolidating early successes requires institutional discipline, transparency, and sustained engagement with the Nigerian people,” the statement added.

OYP reaffirmed its confidence in General Musa and pledged support for the Defence Ministry.

“With consistency, inclusiveness, and sustained reforms, these gains can translate into lasting peace and national stability,” the Parliament concluded.
