Osun State Gov. Ademola Adeleke has expressed confidence that Saturday’s governorship election will be peaceful, saying he expects to win another term in office.
Adeleke spoke shortly after casting his vote in the polls alongside other voters at his polling unit in Ede North, where voters across the state prepare to choose their governor for the next four years.
Having come in under the People's Democratic Party (PDP), he is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party.
The governor said he was confident in the people of Osun and urged residents to come out and vote without fear.
His comments came amid concerns over alleged intimidation, violence and vote-buying in the days leading to the election. Adeleke and other political actors have repeatedly called for a peaceful poll.
Adeleke said he believed the election would reflect the wishes of the people and expressed confidence that he would emerge victorious.
“If the election is free and fair, I will win,” Adeleke said during his campaign in Osogbo.
The governor’s campaign has also called on security agencies to remain neutral and protect voters and election officials.
The election is being closely watched because of the strong contest involving Adeleke, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji and other candidates.
Two candidates, Adebayo Simon Adewale of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Adedamola Adebayo of the PDP, withdrew from the race and endorsed Adeleke shortly before the election.
President Bola Tinubu has also urged INEC and security agencies to ensure a peaceful and transparent election, while asking voters to avoid actions that could disrupt the poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised a credible and peaceful election as voters across Osun head to polling units Saturday.
