Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has called for an urgent overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, warning that instability is worsening across the country despite massive financial investments.
Kwankwaso, who is also the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, issued a statement on Tuesday via the social media platform X.
He raised concerns that bandits, terrorists, and kidnappers are driving citizens into persistent fear.
“I have noted with grave concern the escalating wave of insecurity that has engulfed our beloved nation.
"Once again, Nigeria is bleeding profusely,” Kwankwaso said.
The former defense minister specifically listed Zamfara, Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, Kwara, and Oyo as states heavily hit by the wave of violence.
He pointed out that citizens can no longer sleep with peace of mind.
He further expressed shock over how openly criminal gangs now operate.
“What is most alarming is the audacity of these criminals, who now brazenly hold live sessions on social media to taunt the authorities and terrorise the public.
This is totally unacceptable and not befitting of a sovereign nation like ours,” he added.
Insisting that the current military strategy has failed to protect innocent lives, Kwankwaso argued that the real issue is not a shortage of resources, but a lack of political will.
He called on the government to improve security welfare, boost intelligence gathering, and heavily invest in education and jobs to address the root causes of crime.
“As someone who has served this country at various levels, including as Governor of Kano State and Minister of Defence, where we confronted and significantly reduced security challenges through decisive leadership and community engagement, I remain convinced that insecurity is not insurmountable,” he stated.
