Opposition parties in Nigeria have criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following deadly bomb attacks in Maiduguri, calling for stronger action to address insecurity.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemned the explosions, which killed at least 23 people and injured over 100 others.

The attacks, believed to have been carried out by suspected suicide bombers, targeted crowded locations including markets and areas near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

In its reaction, the PDP said the incident shows what it described as a failure of the current administration to protect Nigerians.

The party stated that the government must go beyond statements and take “decisive steps” to end the violence, stressing that the protection of lives is the primary duty of any government.

Similarly, the ADC condemned the attacks and called on the president to act quickly to restore security across the country.

The party urged the government to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve coordination among security agencies and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

The criticism comes as President Tinubu has already directed security chiefs to move to Maiduguri and “take charge of the situation” following the attacks.

The bombings are among the deadliest in the city in recent years and have raised fresh concerns about the activities of extremist groups such as Boko Haram.

Security has since been tightened across the city, with residents urged to remain calm but vigilant.

The incident has also renewed debate over Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges and the need for stronger government response.
