A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party is set to hold a special convention in Abuja on Saturday to formally ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The convention, scheduled for the A-Class Event Centre in Wuse 2, Abuja, marks the latest move by the Kabiru Turaki-led bloc within the PDP to position Jonathan as its flagbearer ahead of the next election cycle.
An invitation signed by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, and National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Dakas Shan, described the gathering as a “Special National Convention for the Ratification of the Nomination of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR as the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
The planned ratification follows the faction’s earlier decision to grant Jonathan a waiver and clear him as its sole presidential aspirant.
Former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, who chaired the screening committee, said the decision was based on Jonathan’s long political experience as deputy governor, governor, vice president and president.
The development also comes days after a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit seeking to stop Jonathan from contesting the 2027 election, a ruling supporters described as a major legal boost for the former president’s possible return.
Despite the growing political momentum, Jonathan has remained cautious about publicly declaring his intention to run.
“Presidential race is not a computer game,” the former president said during a recent meeting with supporters in Abuja.
“I will consult widely before making any decision.”
Political observers say the move could further reshape opposition politics ahead of 2027, especially as internal divisions continue within the PDP and other opposition platforms.
