Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has emerged as the sole aspirant for the 2027 presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress following the close of nomination form sales by the party.

The party confirmed that the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the presidential election has officially ended, with Obi reportedly being the only politician to purchase the forms before the deadline.

Sources within the party told the media that “Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the only aspirant who purchased the forms” for the presidential contest.

The NDC, however, extended by one week the deadline for the collection of nomination forms for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly positions. According to the party, the extension “applied only to aspirants seeking tickets into the State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and Governorship positions.”

The development marks another major step in Obi’s political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election after his recent move from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC amid broader opposition coalition talks.

The party’s timetable shows that screening for aspirants who purchased and completed their forms will begin on May 19 and end on May 26.

It is widely believed that Obi’s emergence as the lone aspirant could signal an attempt by the NDC to avoid a divisive primary and quickly rally opposition support around a single candidate ahead of the next election cycle.
