President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
The presidency announced the decision in a statement issued Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Adeniyi’s current tenure extension was due to end on 1st August, 2026.
However, Tinubu approved an additional six months to allow the customs chief complete key reforms and oversee a smooth leadership transition within the Nigeria Customs Service.
“The six-month extension, which will expire in February 2027, is to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service,” the statement said.
The presidency added that during the extension period, Adeniyi will work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to manage promotions and retirements within the agency.
“During the transition period, Adeniyi, working with the Nigeria Customs Service Board, will ensure the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years,” the statement said.
Adeniyi joined the Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.
He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming deputy comptroller in 2012, comptroller in 2017 and assistant comptroller-general in 2020.
He was appointed acting deputy comptroller-general in January 2023 before President Tinubu named him comptroller-general in June of the same year.
The extension means Adeniyi will continue leading the service as it pursues ongoing customs modernisation and trade facilitation reforms.
