Public service workers under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council have declared a three-day warning strike from 2nd to 4th October over worsening economic hardship and demands for better wages.

The council directed workers in federal, state and local governments to join the action, which will begin at midnight Friday and end Sunday.

The decision was contained in a circular dated 1st October and signed by the council’s National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga, following the Federal Government’s failure to address demands submitted to President Bola Tinubu on 21st of September.

The workers are demanding a reduction in petrol prices to ₦500 per litre, an immediate wage award and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had earlier called for the urgent establishment of a tripartite committee to begin negotiations, saying the process should start early enough to prevent delays in implementing a new wage law.

In the latest circular, the council said, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

It also directed public servants to participate, saying, “all Public Servants in the services of Federal, State and Local Governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all.”

The council added, “The time to act and mobilise workers for the three days warning strike is now,” and urged its affiliates to disseminate the directive nationwide.

The planned strike comes amid renewed labour demands for relief as rising fuel, transport and other living costs continue to put pressure on workers’ incomes.
