Film director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday in their Brentwood home, and police are investigating the deaths as an apparent homicide, authorities said.

Emergency crews discovered a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman inside after a 3:30 p.m. call.

Detectives are questioning a family member as part of the probe.

The Reiner family asked for privacy and said in a statement, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss.”

Former President Barack Obama posted on X: “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. … We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote that he and his wife were “heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner,” calling Reiner “the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love” and praising his activism and work for children and civil rights.

Rob Reiner was a prominent actor and director whose career spanned decades.

He first became famous as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on TV’s All in the Family and directed hits including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally... and A Few Good Men.

He co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment and won awards as both actor and director.
